New onboard service solutions includes compostable cups and ultra‑lightweight cutlery
Sky-Blue focuses on eco-design to optimise inflight hospitality
The British company Sky-Blue unveils new onboard service solutions, including compostable cups and ultra‑lightweight cutlery. The company maintains that these items’ sustainability lies both in their composition and in their weight.
Sky-Blue, which presents itself as a partner to airlines based in Reading, Berkshire, UK, is bringing to market products described as innovative for onboard service. The company highlights Nimbuva, 100% compostable, recyclable, and biodegradable paper cups designed to replace traditional PLA‑PE lined alternatives.
The company says it integrates eco‑design from the outset: selecting recyclable or reusable materials, engineering packaging for sorting, and thinking through durability and repairability. The stated aim is to align aesthetics, operational constraints and regulatory compliance in a demanding aviation environment.
No small savings
The company is also launching ultra‑lightweight cutlery to reduce onboard mass. Reducing weight and waste is, the company explains, a direct lever to lower fuel consumption and emissions, while improving customer perception. Sky‑Blue does not quantify the fuel savings enabled by cutlery “up to 60% lighter than traditional stainless‑steel alternatives” in a sector where steel cutlery is often reserved for Business and First.
The portfolio spans cutlery, tableware, trays and service accessories, glassware (wine, water, spirits), holloware and tongs, disposables and textiles. Sky‑Blue underlines that Economy, Business and First are the focus of dedicated developments to balance ergonomics, compactness, “stackability” and visual differentiation. By centralising design and procurement, Sky‑Blue also aims to simplify purchasing and ensure brand consistency in the cabin. The company emphasises a whole‑lifecycle approach, from design to end‑of‑life solutions, to help airlines meet measurable environmental targets.
Sky‑Blue thus hopes to meet the rising expectations of carriers facing efficiency imperatives, cost optimisation and growing demand for responsible products.
