United unveils Relax Row: economy seats that convert into a couch

Economy rows convert to couches from 2027

United Airlines has introduced United Relax Row, a dedicated three-seat row in United Economy that transforms into a couch-like space after take-off. The airline, which says it is the first in North America to offer this seating option and holds regional exclusivity on the design, plans a commercial launch in 2027 and a rollout to more than 200 Boeing 787 and 777 widebodies by 2030. Positioned between United Economy and United Premium Plus, the option targets families with young children, couples and solo travellers seeking extra comfort without leaving the main cabin. United expects to offer up to 12 Relax Row sections per aircraft, depending on configuration.

Each seat in the row features an individually adjustable leg rest that folds up at a 90-degree angle to create a larger, mattress-like surface for sleeping, stretching or watching films. Customers receive a custom-fitted mattress pad, a specially sized blanket and two additional pillows. Families are also given a plush toy and a Children’s Travel Kit developed with Sesame Street, which includes an activity book, a slide puzzle and a sensory calming strip to help create a more tranquil onboard environment.

Building brand loyalty

"As a leading premium airline, we're committed to delivering new, industry-leading experiences for all of our customers – and the United Relax Row is the perfect example of that. Customers traveling in United Economy on long-haul flights deserve an option for more space and comfort, and this is one way we can deliver that for them," said Andrew Nocella, United's Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer. "United is the only North American airline offering a product like the United Relax Row and is one of the many reasons why we're continuing to win brand loyal customers."

The airline points to several family-focused measures already in place. A dynamic seat map lets a child under 12 sit next to an adult in their booking at no extra charge at the time of purchase, with the system automatically moving families into preferred seats if needed. Children’s meals are available on flights with complimentary meal service, and the inflight entertainment catalogue features a curated selection for younger travellers. Relax Row extends that approach by adding a more spacious configuration for families seeking additional room in economy.

The product is due to go on sale in 2027 ahead of a phased deployment across more than 200 Boeing 787 and 777 aircraft by 2030. United has not disclosed pricing, but says the option will sit between United Economy and United Premium Plus.
