Yahoo! has unveiled the UK version of its Yahoo! Answers project – a personalised Q&A system that could soon become a permanent fixture in the internet giant’s travel section.

The free service allows users to send a question via the Yahoo! Answers homepage and receive responses from other users.

It is hoped the beta version will be handed a full in the future and integrated into Yahoo!’s various portals, such as Travel, where it could be a significant new string to the Yahoo! bow alongside natural search, paid-for search and price comparisons on Kelkoo.

The project has already gone through a successful test in the US and is being launched simultaneously as a beta version in Canada as well as in the UK trial.

Yahoo! expects integration into the travel portal as a logical step for the service as users will be able to obtain information on hotels, restaurants and destinations from fellow users.

The move is the latest in a series of developments within the online travel industry to hand a significant amount of influence back to the consumers.

The beta test for Yahoo! Answers comes hot on the heels of the launch of consumer review site Trip Advisor in the UK in January.

Director of Yahoo! Search UK, Salim Mitha, said: “At Yahoo!, we are huge believers in the power of community, and with the largest global base of web users we are in a unique position to tap into the vast knowledge and experience of individuals to benefit the greater group.

“Yahoo! Answers lets users get their questions answered in a personalised way and share their knowledge with other web users.”

Yahoo! Answers will be moderated by a dedicated team in the UK.
