Amex GBT appoints Michael Esquibel as chief technology officer

Appointment strengthens AI and tech strategy

American Express Global Business Travel (Amex GBT) has named Michael Esquibel as chief technology officer. In the role, he will steer the company’s technology and AI strategy at enterprise scale. His remit spans AI initiatives, commercial, servicing, and mid- and back-office platforms, together with the global network’s technology services.

Esquibel will also oversee data infrastructure and governance, the delivery of strategic programmes, technology integration, client onboarding, supplier management and the company’s technology support.

The appointment comes as Amex GBT accelerates its technology transformation. Priorities for Esquibel include embedding AI across the organisation, strengthening infrastructure and data governance, and developing AI-powered tools designed to improve operational efficiency and the traveller experience.

Esquibel has spent eight years at Amex GBT, most recently as senior vice-president, technology and platform engineering. Before joining the group, he was vice-president and chief of staff, global operations and technology at Western Union, where he led large-scale programmes across operations and technology.

He replaces David Thompson, who previously held the role and left the company in May.
