FCO launches trip-planning guide for young travellers
The Foreign Office (FCO) has launched a trip-planning guide for gap-year travellers that is available online and as an app.
Called Plan.Pack.Explore, the guide includes travel health advice, guidance on obtaining the right visa and keeping money safe, and explains what the FCO can and can’t do if young people get into trouble abroad.
Khalida Cox of the FCO’s Know Before You Go team said: “Now the exam results are out and people are considering a gap year, preparation can be daunting for young people and parents – particularly if it is a first trip away without the family.
“Plan.Pack.Explore helps travellers understand exactly what they need to do before they go away and provides essential information for parents.”
Cox said: “The guide will also be invaluable for those who book last-minute travel and need essential travel advice.”
She warned: “If you are not prepared before you go away, things can go horribly wrong.
“Over the last six months, one in four 16-24 year olds travelled without insurance and only a quarter made health-related preparations before going overseas, leaving people at risk of high bills for medical care or repatriation.”
Plan.Pack.Explore is available in print, online and as an app for iPad, iPhone (iOS 5 and above) and Android devices.
