Uber and Motional launch robotaxi service in Las Vegas

Robotaxis on Uber at no extra cost

Uber and Motional have launched a self-driving taxi service in Las Vegas, available directly in the Uber app. Built on the IONIQ 5 robotaxi — a 100% electric vehicle with SAE Level 4 autonomous driving capabilities and co-developed by Motional and Hyundai Motor Group — the service is offered at no additional cost for certain ride types. For now, it covers designated pick-up points along the Strip and neighbouring areas, with a wider roll-out planned.

Testing since 2022

Riders requesting an UberX, Uber Electric, Uber Comfort or Uber Comfort Electric can now be matched with a Motional robotaxi. A notification in the app lets them accept the autonomous ride or switch to a human-driven alternative. Vehicle unlocking, trip start and support are handled within the Uber interface. The partners highlight safety protocols, compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) and access to human assistance at any time.

At launch, a human operator remains behind the wheel to supervise the road. The partners say they are targeting a fully driverless service by the end of 2026, subject to the necessary authorisations. Las Vegas, with traffic concentrated between hotel-casinos, shopping areas and the airport, lends itself to standardised routes. Motional, which has been running tests since 2022 in the Nevada city, aims to leverage its autonomous driving system and experience gained from earlier commercial operations. Anticipated benefits include greater service continuity, the electrification of journeys and improved accessibility for visitors and residents alike.
