SWISS and SBB extend Air Rail to Grindelwald

One ticket, guaranteed rail connections

Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) and Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) are adding Grindelwald to their SWISS Air Rail network with the support of Jungfrau Railways. The link extends connections from Interlaken into the heart of the Swiss Alps. With this addition, the SWISS Air Rail network now covers 25 destinations across Switzerland, Germany and Austria, continuing a strategy set in motion with the addition of Interlaken in December 2022. The announcement highlights the appeal of the Jungfrau region, a flagship destination for international travellers drawn to its alpine landscapes.

The promise is a seamless journey. A single boarding pass covers both flight and rail, connections are guaranteed in the event of delays and train tickets remain flexible, usable the day before departure or the day after arrival. Members of the Miles & More programme earn points on the rail portion, while Business and First passengers travel in first class on the trains. The new service targets key origin markets — the UK, the US and Asia — that favour bundled flight-and-rail bookings and simpler access to resorts from the airport.

Beyond the pull of Grindelwald and the wider Jungfrau region, the extension reflects a broader European trend of pairing rail with air to curb short-haul flights and improve end-to-end journeys. By strengthening the rail option on domestic legs, the Air Rail model addresses expectations for smoother travel while contributing to decarbonisation. It also reinforces Switzerland’s image as an accessible destination where access to major alpine sites is organised from touchdown, with guaranteed connections and a flexibility policy suited to multimodal itineraries.
