Lonely Planet has launched a Discover e-books series for the iPad.

Inspired by its full-color print series, Discover e-books help travellers discover the most important sights in destinations.

Launch titles include Great Britain, Italy, Spain, France, and Ireland and are normally priced at £12.99, although a launch promotion has them at £9.99.

Travellers can bookmark the places they don’t want to miss, take notes along the way, use Google or Wikipedia to search for more information, email or share suggestions with friends, and click on hyperlinks to get straight to a hotel, restaurant or attraction’s website.

Discover e-books also allow iPad users to experience Lonely Planet’s recommendations through images from its photographers. It also offers tailored itineraries by region, theme or length of trip and advice from local experts.

“Travellers’ needs are constantly changing and the iPad has given us the opportunity to reinvent our Discover guides as e-books for a completely new travel planning experience,”  said Matt Goldberg, CEO Lonely Planet.

“In developing our Discover e-books series, we’ve pushed Apple’s e-publishing technology to its limits creating immersive and intuitive guides to help travellers get to the heart of a place and enjoy the very best each destination has to offer.”

The series will be available from Apple’s iBookstore from today. For more see lonelyplanet.com/ebooks.
