Searches for stays known as coolcations - a trip to a cooler climate destination - have surged by 420% over the past three months as holidaymakers look to milder UK destinations amid rising summer temperatures, according to data from Awaze, Europe's largest provider of holiday rentals.

The brand that owns cottages.com and Hoseasons said it has found that searches for "escape the heat" have also risen by 300% over the past three months, highlighting growing demand for UK breaks that offer respite from the UK’s string of heatwaves it has recently experienced.

The “coolcation” trend has built in popularity in recent years and is seeing more people seeking out holidays in destinations with cooler climates, as they look to enjoy quieter spaces and outdoor experiences like hiking in more comfortable environments.

Awaze's search data shows holidaymakers are looking beyond traditional summer hotspots, with Scotland emerging as a leading “coolcation” destination, as the most-viewed location across Awaze’s UK portfolio, with the country’s dramatic landscapes and easy access to nature are proving increasingly appealing.

The flexibility, convenience and affordability of UK staycations continue to appeal to holidaymakers looking for stress-free breaks without the complexity of travelling abroad.
