Much-hyped US-based travel meta-search disruptor is to close

Hipmunk, the much-hyped US-based travel metasearch disruptor bought by SAP Concur in 2016, is to close.

The metasearch site will close shop in January 23, a message posted on the brand’s site announced yesterday.

Hipmunk was founded by Adam Goldstein and Reddit co-founder Steve Huffman claiming it was able to take the agony out of searching for flights and hotels.

Ahead of its acquisition by corporate travel and expense management specialist SAP Concur it raised $20 million in a Series C funding round in 2014.

The statement on the Hipmunk site said: “Today, we have important news to share.  After nine years of being a travel search innovator, Hipmunk is being retired.

“The current plan is to stop supporting the product on Jan 23, 2020.  At that time, the Hipmunk website and app will no longer be available for use.

“We are grateful to all the travelers and partners that have joined us on this journey.”

Hipmunk confirmed that from January 23 no access to customer accounts will possible and there will be no change to any reservations made with providers through the site.

The firm added: “Any trip data stored on Hipmunk will no longer be available. However, if you made a booking on a partner site, you can reach out to the partner directly.”
