South African Tourism is embarking on a virtual reality strategy to drive inbound vistor numbers.
The government-run organisation has made a significant investment in Oculus Rift technology, which it will showcase at consumer events throughout 2015.
The department said the initiative has been designed to give potential holidaymakers an opportunity to experience South Africa before making a booking.
Monika Iuel, general manager international marketing, said: “In five minutes it will give consumers a snippet of what it’s like to visit [South Africa].”
The virtual reality headsets includes an abseiling experience, kite surfing and visits to vineyards.
The tourism authority also revealed plans to launch an online trade training tool, dedicated to the UK and Irish markets.
The course will be available to agents early in 2015.
Those who pass the online exam will be listed as a South Africa specialist on the website.
Consumers will be able to find a local specialist agent by entering their post code on the South African tourism website.
Iuel said South Africa was still enjoying the legacy of the 2010 World Cup, and that hoteliers were continuing to invest in new properties.
The Marriot group recently purchased Protea Hospitality Group in South Africa and is making a significant effort to boost the brand.
