Living the future

T-City is the joint future lab of Deutsche Telekom and the city of Friedrichshafen. The city is located on Lake Constance and was selected as the T-City in February 2007 from a total of 51 applicants. Up until 2012 T City Friedrichshafen will be a showcase for modern information and communication technology, demonstrating how it improves the quality of life and community in the city.

Both partners are turning the world of tomorrow into a real experience under the slogan "T‑City Friedrichshafen. Living the future". For the first time, citizens, companies, schools, scientists, the medical community, and the city administration are collaborating on innovative applications for day-to-day use – in and for their city.

Thanks to the state-of-the-art information and communication technology and outstanding ideas, T-City intends to make everyday life easier for locals and tourists, young and old, teachers and students, council experts and entrepreneurs, and to create tangible benefits in all areas of life. To turn this concept into reality, Deutsche Telekom 2007 installed a state-of-the-art broadband infrastructure for fixed-line and mobile communications, otherwise only found in large municipalities, throughout the city of Friedrichshafen - all within the space of a few months. Around 30 projects have been implemented in T-City since the project was launched. They break down over six project areas that cover virtually all aspects of city life.

In June 2009, nine "futurist" households were selected in Friedrichshafen from 548 applications. The "futurists" can test state-of-the-art information and communication technology as well as T‑City projects within their own four walls for one year completely free of charge.

The T-City project has special consequences for Deutsche Telekom: "In Friedrichshafen we demonstrate what we mean by collaborative service as provided by an innovation-friendly, integrated telecommunications group," reports Deutsche Telekom CEO René Obermann. At the same time, Mayor Andreas Brand emphasizes the benefits for his city: "T-City means that Friedrichshafen is now perceived as an innovative, future-friendly city even outside the state of Baden-Württemberg. But it is also equally important for me that virtually every resident benefits from one or even several T-City solutions."
