Malaysia Airlines has reassured customers that no data was compromised after its official website was attacked by hackers.

A group calling itself ‘Official Cyber Caliphate’ claims to have carried out the hack, which appeared to redirect visitors to a spoof site.

Visitors to malaysiaairlines.com were confronted by an image of a lizard in a top hat, monocle and tuxedo.

A message on the site referred to the missing MH370 flight that disappeared in March and has not been found. It said: ‘404 – Plane Not Found’.

Another message read: “Hacked by Lizard Squad – Official Cyber Caliphate”

In a statement Malaysia Airlines said the attack appeared to be a redirect from the official site and that it did not affect its data servers.

“Malaysia Airlines assures customers and clients that its website was not hacked and this temporary glitch does not affect their bookings and that user data remains secured,” the airline said.

The airline, which was taken private last year after the loss of MH370 and shooting down of flight MH17 over Ukraine, said the official site would be back up within 22 hours.
