Cheapflights hosted its first consumer-voted awards in the UK this week following a first awards ceremony held in South Africa.

The metasearch site and travel deals platform hosted over 200 partners at Cucumber, Sea Containers House, on the south bank of the Thames.

Winner in 20 categories were revealed by guest presenter for the evening, the comedian Lucy Porter.

Categories ranged from favourite airline cabin crew and airport for duty-free shopping, to best travel blog and favourite short and long-haul destinations.

Andrew Shelton, managing director of Cheapflights, said: “This was the right time to launch a new award scheme here in the UK.

“Our brand has been surging for the last couple of years – we’ve never had so many subscribers and users, and the future’s looking bright for us.

“It’s the perfect time for us to be celebrating and sharing the excellence of the products and brands with which we work, and who have helped us to get where we are today.”

Over 60,000 votes were cast in total, during an online voting phase which ran from mid-May to mid-June.

Shortlisted candidates in each category were selected by an expert panel, before being put to the vote among the Cheapflights newsletter and social media communities.

Shelton added: “We’ve got over twenty years’ expertise as the original flight search and comparison platform and wanted to use that insight to go deliberately granular in seeking the views of the people who matter to us most – our users – on every aspect of the flight booking and travel experience.

“Our annual awards will provide UK travellers, and the industry, with a benchmark for quality and user confidence going forward.

“In what we can describe as turbulent times it is apparent that the UK has far from lost its appetite for travel, as we’ve seen a near 50% year on year increase in users of our core flight search product, which we expect to number 25 million in 2017, more than a quarter of a million people are using our app every month and we now have over four million subscribers to our mailing list.

“These are exciting times for the brand and we are looking forward to working closely with new and existing partners as we grow further in 2018.”

In February it was announced that Cheapflights parent Momondo group had been bought by KAYAK and Booking.com parent Priceline for $550 million. That deal remains subject to EU regulatory approval but is expected to be completed later this year.
